Pepperl+Fuchs helps Implement the Machinery Directive

IEC 61508 and EN ISO 13849 replace EN 954-1

New rules for the functional safety of plants and machinery outlined in IEC 61508 and EN ISO 13849
New rules for the functional safety of plants and machinery outlined in IEC 61508 and EN ISO 13849
The changes in standards concerning machine safety has been a topic of discussion among machine designers and builders. The previous EN 954-1 standardis being replaced by the successor standards IEC 61508,/EN 62061 and EN ISO 13849-1.

Manufacturers of machines and plants are now required to provide quantitative studies for safety devices. Existing machines must also be recertified, and proof of safety must be provided to the new functional safety standards. Corresponding values will be required for components.

As one of the first sensor manufacturers, Pepperl+Fuchs helps you to comply with the safety standards by providing these values not only for all safety products, but also for standard components.

Safety values for standard components

As a full-range supplier for industrial sensors, Pepperl+Fuchs makes it easy to access the relevant values of components already used. This helps you calculate safety assessments.

Your benefits at a glance

  • Standard components can still be used in safety applications.
  • Easy integration of standardized values in the calculation of safety functions, make it easier to quantitatively prove the safe operation of the machine or plant.
  • Values are available here in different formats.

Values overview

 Designation  Description
MTTFd (Mean Time to Dangerous Failure)
 TM (Mission Time)
 DC (Diagnostic Coverage)
L10h Nominal service life (for rotary encoders with regard to
service life of ball bearings)

The values and calculation procedures have been developed by BGIA (Institute for Occupational Safety).

When the values for all the components are available, the safety assessment of the machine or plant can follow. At Pepperl+Fuchs, you already have easy access to the values of the majority of standard sensors.

Where can I find the values?

Refer to the product data sheets for the relevant values. Just enter the model number of the product in the search box on our website.

In the right column of this page, under the heading Software, you can download Sistema libraries which contain the most important product values.
